HP printer turns off unexpectedly or repeatedly - HP LaserJet Pro M102w

Resolve power-related issues if the printer turns off without warning, printer jobs fail, or the printer does not respond to any job started after entering sleep mode.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Check energy saving settings (optional)

HP printers are designed to reduce power consumption by powering off when the printer is not active. When you are ready to use the printer again, press the power button to turn the printer back on.

Check the Schedule On and Off or Auto Power Off setting in the Setup menu on printers with a control panel display. Or use following steps to access the setting through the HP Smart app.

  1. Open the HP Smart app, and then select your printer on the home screen.

If you do not have the HP Smart app, download it from 123.hp.com.

  2. Click Printer Settings > Advanced settings.

  3. Click the Settings tab, click Power Management, and then enter the printer PIN if prompted to review settings information and options.

    Note:

Depending on your printer, the auto-off setting is preset and cannot be changed.

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

  1. Press the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and to the printer.

  5. Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Update the printer firmware

HP regularly releases new firmware versions with printer enhancements or issue fixes. Update firmware regularly to make sure you are getting the most out of your printer.

CAUTION:

Do not turn off the printer during a firmware update. This can permanently damage your printer.

  • From the printer control panel (network printers only): Many HP printers with control panel menus can install updates directly from HP. Updating the firmware from the control panel varies by printer model.

For example, touch the Setup icon , touch Printer Maintenance, touch Update Printer, and then touch Check Now. Any new updates install automatically.

  • From the HP app:

  • From the HP website: Go to HP Software and Driver Downloads, follow the prompts to open the downloads page for your printer. Click Download next to any updates listed under Firmware, and then open and follow the HP Printer Update prompts to update the firmware.

For more information, go to Update the firmware on an HP printer.

Make sure other devices are not causing the issue

Having too many devices connected to your printer, or using a USB hub, might impact power needed to perform properly.

  1. If the printer is connected to a USB hub, disconnect the hub, and then connect the USB cable directly to the computer and the printer.

  2. Remove any memory cards or USB drives from the printer.

  3. Turn the printer off, and then turn the printer on.

Replace the power module or the battery

Depending on your printer model, the power supply might be faulty or the battery in a mobile printer needs to be replaced.

  • External power module: If the indicator light on the power module is off, or if the power module does not have an indicator light and you have tried all of the preceding solutions, replace the power module.

  • Internal power module (replaceable power modules only): If the indicator light on the printer is off or if there is no indicator light, and you have tried all the preceding solutions, service the printer.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.

  • Mobile printers with a battery: If the indicator light on the printer or the power module is off, or if there is no indicator light and you have tried all of the preceding solutions, replace the power module or service the printer.

If the printer powers on when connected with the power cord, allow the battery to charge, and then try using the printer on battery power only. If the printer does not turn on, replace the battery. Go to Contact HP Customer Support for information about replacing the battery.

Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.

To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
